Middle School
What are the Middle Grades like at Gaia?
Middle School includes Grades 6 through 8, a developmental stage where students stand at the threshold of adolescence. As physical growth accelerates and individuality strengthens, students often experience new emotional sensitivity and a growing need to understand the world for themselves. During these years, learning becomes more analytical and structured, supporting students as their capacity to organize information, observe carefully, and form thoughtful conclusions begins to awaken.
In our Waldorf-inspired Middle School curriculum, students deepen academic skills through experience-based learning across science, history, math, and the arts. Scientific study emphasizes observation and the development of sound judgment through subjects such as acoustics, optics, mineralogy, astronomy, chemistry, physics, and anatomy and physiology. Humanities and history expand from the Medieval world and the rise and fall of civilizations to the Age of Exploration, revolutions, and the shaping of the modern world. By eighth grade, students grow into more independent thinkers and writers, creating essays, research work, and artistic representations that reflect both intellectual depth and creative skill.
Handwork
Handwork is more than an artistic activity; it is an education of the hands. From the very first classes in first grade, students learn that their hands are one of their most valuable tools for learning, creating, and understanding the world.
In Waldorf-inspired education, handwork is closely connected to child development. As children manipulate materials, practice skills, and create meaningful objects, they strengthen fine motor coordination and support healthy neural pathways and brain development.
For this reason, handwork is approached as a distinct subject, allowing the gradual development of skills over time and supporting the integration of thinking, feeling, and doing.
Language
Gaia School offers a growing bilingual education experience in English and Spanish, designed to meet the language needs of an international and local student community. Most of our staff are bilingual or actively strengthening their skills in both languages, supporting students across daily school life and learning.
We proudly welcome students and staff from 21 different nationalities, creating a multicultural environment where children learn to communicate across languages and cultures with confidence and respect. Main lessons are taught in either Spanish or English, depending on the teacher’s native language, while subjects such as Gardening, Music, and Movement are taught in the language complementary to the main lesson.
Movement
Movement is an essential part of our Waldorf-inspired education. This class goes beyond physical exercise, it supports coordination, balance, strength, and a healthy relationship with the body through purposeful movement.
Students engage in activities that promote gross motor development, spatial awareness, and confidence. Through structured movement exercises, games, and age-appropriate physical challenges, children strengthen self-awareness, focus, and emotional regulation. This approach recognizes that movement supports not only physical health, but also cognitive and social-emotional development, making it a fundamental part of our curriculum. The Movement class is taught in Spanish.
Gardening
At Gaia School, gardening holds a special place as an integral part of our educational approach. Our gardening classes actively involve children in sowing seeds, nurturing plants, and observing the natural cycles of growth.
This hands-on, garden-based learning builds practical skills while strengthening a deep connection to the natural world. Gardening is one of the ways we bring nature-based education to life on campus.
Through this work, students cultivate patience, responsibility, and an understanding of the interconnectedness of living systems, supporting a holistic, whole-child approach to learning.
Music
Music helps shape the rhythm of school life. Within our Waldorf-inspired education, music is one of our most valued subject classes. We recognize music as a holistic art form that supports emotional balance, creativity, and self-awareness. Our Music class goes beyond the acquisition of musical skills, it is a journey of expression, connection, and confidence-building.
Through singing, playing instruments, and movement, students develop a strong sense of rhythm and melody, while cultivating a deeper appreciation for the arts.
