Sustainable and non-toxic
At Gaia School, caring for the health of children and the health of the planet are inseparable goals. Our campus is designed and managed with sustainability in mind, allowing students to learn in an environment that reflects the ecological values we teach.
All of the school’s water comes from natural springs on the property, and we treat and recycle water for irrigation of gardens and landscaping. The campus is surrounded by fruit trees that students help harvest, and we continue to plant additional trees each year to strengthen the forest ecosystem and increase biodiversity.
These everyday practices help students understand that stewardship of the land is not an abstract idea—it is something we practice daily.
We also prioritize creating a low-toxicity environment for learning. The school makes many of its own soaps and cleaning agents from natural ingredients, and we use non-toxic building materials in campus construction.
Our classrooms are designed to minimize unnecessary electromagnetic exposure, with Wi-Fi kept out of classrooms and electrical lines buried underground to preserve the natural landscape and reduce visual and environmental impact.
Buildings are developed using low-impact construction practices that work with the terrain rather than against it. Together, these choices create a campus that supports student health while modeling the kind of responsible relationship with nature that Gaia hopes its students will carry into the future.
